An Iconic History: The Monaco F1 Grand Prix

Steeped In Formula One History

The Monaco Grand Prix first happened pre-Second World War in 1929 where it became part of the European Championships. It was only post World War II in 1950 where Monaco became part of the very first Grand Prix. The other famous tracks included in this inaugural Grand Prix calendar was Silverstone, Monza and Spa-Francorchamps.

A Legendary Street Circuit

It's one of the most iconic street circuits on the F1 calendar which has been more or less the same since 1950. The most significant revision was in 1973 was when the famous harbour front swimming pool was built. Drivers now have to manoeuvre the car's round the pool at 200 km/h, most notably all this action happens right in front of where the your charter yacht will be berthed. The Gasworks hairpin was replaced by La Rascasse and Anthony Noghes corners in the same year.

The Famous Tunnel

Monaco is one of only three circuits in F1 history that has included a tunnel. Detroit Street Circuit (1982 - 1988) and the Yas Marina Circuit, Abu Dhabi (2009) are the other two. The tunnel takes drivers directly under the Fairmont Hotel taking drivers down to the Nouvelle Chicane. Famously, Niki Lauder asked Bernie Ecclestone to get the fire crews to wet the tunnel floor in 1984 to provide similar conditions to the outside track which was being pelted by rain in a mighty storm.

Mr Monaco

British Driver Graham Hill was nicknamed 'Mr Monaco' after 5 wins around this track in the 1960's. However it is legend and drivers favourite driver, Aryton Senna who still holds the record around Monaco with 6 wins - 5 consecutively between 1989 and 1993. In third and fourth place is Michael Schumacker (5) and Lewis Hamilton (3).

In the Drink

Only two drivers in F1 history have managed to crash their cars into the harbour. First, Italian Alberto Ascari was in the lead in 1955 before crashing through a hay bale after taking the chicane too quickly and ending up in the Mediterranean Sea. He and the car sank to the sea floor, but managed to free himself and get away with just a broken nose. Fast forward 10 years to 1965, Aussie Paul Hawkins lost control and spun at the same chicane ending up in the drink, he walked away uninjured.

Fewest Finishers Ever

Monaco is notoriously a challenging track, holding various records for the least amount of drivers finishing a race. In 1966, just 4 / 16 finished and in 1966 only 3 crossed the finish line. The winner was Olivier Panis, who started dead last and drove a great wet race to record his only ever win in Formula One.

Flying Private To Monaco

The easiest way to travel to Monaco is to charter a private jet to Nice followed by a short 20 minute Helicopter transfer from Nice Airport to the heliport in Monaco. Get out the helicopter and walk straight onto your chartered yacht for the weekend.
