Formentera Travel Guide - The Ultimate Retreat

Formentera is the smallest of Spain’s Balearic islands in the Mediterranean Sea. It’s reachable by ferry from its more crowded, better known island neighbor, Ibiza, and makes for a popular day-trip destination in the summertime. It’s known for its clear waters and long stretches of beach backed by dunes and pine trees. Pastimes include snorkeling and sailing, with equipment rentals and boat charters available.

The main island of Formentera is 19 kilometres long and is located about 6 kilometres south of Ibiza in the Mediterranean Sea. More specifically Formentera is part of the delimitation of the Balearic Sea which is a northwestern element of the Mediterranean Sea. Its major villages are Sant Francesc Xavier, Sant Ferran de ses Roques, El Pilar de la Mola (on the La Mola peninsula) and La Savina.

Formentera has beaches galore, from long swathes of sugar-white sand to secluded rocky coves and nooks, all lapped by shallow cerulean waters. Some of the most popular sand spits, including Ses Illetes, often declared one of Europe’s most beautiful beaches, and Llevant, are equipped only with a couple of wooden beach bars and restaurants, but comfort-lovers will find sunbeds and umbrellas ready at Platja Migjorn and other spots. Combine this with cliff-edge lighthouses, ancient stone watchtowers and fishing villages, and you’ll soon discover why Formentera draws people back again and again.
